Where Were You in 1965? — A Look Back for the MHS Class of '65

So… where were you in 1965?

It’s been 60 years since you graduated from Marysville High School — but we bet you still remember the sound of the school bell, the bleachers at Homer Hanson Stadium, and the excitement of senior year.

In the news:

  • The Voting Rights Act was signed into law.
  • The first U.S. combat troops landed in Vietnam.
  • NASA launched Gemini 6 and 7, paving the way for the moon landing.
  • Medicare and Medicaid were created, bringing healthcare to millions.
  • The Beatles performed for 55,000 fans at Shea Stadium.
  • The Astrodome opened — the world’s first domed sports stadium.
  • The Gateway Arch in St. Louis was completed.

On the radio:

  • “My Girl” — The Temptations
  • “I Got You Babe” — Sonny & Cher
  • “Satisfaction” — The Rolling Stones
  • “Help!” — The Beatles

On the Big (and Small) Screen

At the Movies:

  • The Sound of Music
  • Doctor Zhivago
  • Thunderball
  • Cat Ballou

On Television:

  • Bonanza
  • Bewitched
  • The Ed Sullivan Show
  • Gilligan’s Island

On Stage: “The Haunting”

Directed by Mr. Dotson, the Class of 1965 performed The Haunting — a suspenseful drama based on Shirley Jackson’s supernatural tale. Marilyn Peeks, Julie Schramm, Tom Burger, and Connie Bredemeier brought the chilling mystery to life, with scenes that still live in memory: locked doors, eerie whispers, and the moment Eleanor cried, “It can’t get in, it won’t get us!”

On the Field: First in the NCKL

The Bulldogs claimed the NCKL championship with a dominant season: six wins, one loss, and two ties. Quarterbacks Jerry Cohorst and Rich Dummermuth led the team, supported by a powerhouse roster including Bob Boyda, Jerry Lake, Bill Lackrouth, and Marvin Throm. Their Homecoming win over Belleville was one for the books — with the Bulldogs pulling ahead 44–0.

New This Year: Cross Country Begins

For the first time, Marysville launched a Cross Country team — coached by Mr. Lauer and Mr. Norris. Mike Scheetz led the squad as top scorer, racing in meets across northeast Kansas. You were the class that helped start a brand-new Bulldog tradition.
